poker big bet

Is this legal to play heads-up hold 'em poker?
Heads up the river then. A person who is the second law does not want to be called the big bet. The river brings 4 card straight on the table and this player has three of a kind, so he asks the other guy wants to "check down", he reveals cards. Is the dead hand, or whether the first player to use this information and place his bet? This was done in the home game and we were not sure, if it is against the rules or just a bad label …
The player who revealed the card is not a dead hand, he is exposed to the hand. Other a player may not use this information to his betting decision. Do something like this in a live tournament and you commit. This was a decision I came across a very similar situation to the Las Vegas Harrah's once.
